I have been reading one of his books where he states that he prays. But my understanding of Buddhism is that there is no God or any other supernatural beings... Likewise all the prayer flags and prayer wheels in Tibet etc...

| Why doesnt The Dalai Lama lead his people in Tibet ? His Holiness The Dalai Lama Spiritual leader of Tibetan Buddhists is in sanctuary, in France while "his people" die protesting. Should he not be there in Tibet and take the same risks as his people as did the great Dr Martin Luther King and Gandhi. ? Exile-Sanctuary ?? He is not in Tibet is he ? I am merely comparing the leadership styles. If he went back to Tibet it would fill world headlines and benefit his cause and that of his people. Sexy Thor> If you think "travelling the world telling people" is more effective than his returning to Tibet you must be in cloud cuckoo land. If Dr King had sat in the comfort (exile) of a calm environment in France do you think his people would have fought his cause, i doubt it. He commands reverence equal to if not greater than that to the Dalai Lama. Millions were and still are inspired by Dr King. Thats not disrespecting the enormous love and respect for the Dalai Lama. | question i've been wondering about?.. ok i don't mean to be blasphemous when i ask this as i kind of believe in Jesus myself but i can't help wondering.. assuming someone existed today and appeared to be extremely spiritual and altruistic (for example the dalai lama) but they claimed to be the son of God, that believing in them led to eternal life and told people that doubting them would not get them into the kingdom of God, would you believe them?? i mean you can't deny that Jesus' message was a very good one, morality wise, but many revolutionary figures for example (as Jesus was considered a revolutionary) have started off with good ideals and then turned against them (Che Guavara for instance who was hero-worshipped at the time) and certain cult leaders, who may have started with good teachings but then twisted them for their own ends. would it really be sensible to completely not doubt someone, however good they appear? after all, it is this blind worship that has led to many dictators being elected and supported so much, when often they have started with noble political goals, people have supported them and trusted in them, and they've turned against the people. i am not in any way suggesting Jesus would do this but assuming there was a second coming, would you really put all your trust and none of your doubts in someone who claimed to be the son of God and was seemingly very good in today's society?? though i feel a bit guilty asking this question cos of my religious beliefs, i'm sure if there is a God he won't mind me questioning a little.. Dalai claimed the chinese have committed cultural genocide on Tibetans because Tibetans in Tibet do not know how to speak in tibetan because they are forced to learn and speak mandarian . On the other hand a lot of tibetans in Tibet complained they cannot get jobs in state and private sectors in Tibet because they do not speak mandarian ? can you see the contradictions in this argument ? what would you say to a native american complaining being not able to get a job in america because he does not speak english ? | Which is better Stoicism or Buddhism? Over the last few years I've read alot of books on Stoicism Like seneca Marcus Aurelius and Epictetus and also their greek forunners like plato ect. I consider myself a Stoic and try to follow the philosophy as best i can but recently I read alot of buddhist books and went to see the Dalai lama when he visited the U.K last month and now i have doubts. The two are very similar in many ways but also very different. I like the faith I have now but there is so much Buddhist writing and teachings while Stoicism is almost non-existent by comparision. Also afew days ago I had a dream where I met a Buddha and I really changed my feeling towards Buddhism and has brought the whole question to a head. Anyway enough about me what do you think? First of all I'm an atheist,what i noticed is doe that Progressive people see the Pope as a backwards thinking arch conservative dinosaur While the Dalai Lama would be consider cool and right on by these progressive social aware types maybe it because the Pope takes a authoritarian view point on everything while the Dalai Lama could'nt be more progressive and understanding Well here are some views the Dalai Lama has expressed that may change your mind 1.At a press conference in 1997 he said man to man and woman to woman sex was sexual misconduct 2.In 2001 he told a Swiss magazine that sexual organs were created for the reproduction between the male and female and anything that deviates from this is not acceptable 3.The Dalai Lama Offered his endoresment to the anti-abortion group cosistent life 4.He Published a list of religious teachings state masterbation is forbidden 5.He claims oral sex is not acceptable even between a married man and wife. | So...Looking forward to the Beijing Games folks ? This years Olympic Games should be amazing, each one surpassing the last in terms of drama, excitement, record breaking feats and astonishing athletes. I keep world affairs and politics seperate from something like the Olympic games simply because I feel that the olypmics are about global solidarity and as well as the perfect stage for the worlds elite to compete against each other - each nations 'creme de la creme', heh. I am well aware of the issues surrounding Chinas human rights violations and their mistreatment of the dalai lama, but that will take second presedence to the games once they get going in full swing. The Dalai Lama succeeded in their objectives on all fronts I think, they got their point across and raised our awareness if it had not been raised already.
