Is it a good idea to feed the ducks whilst in the park?

My partner and I often feed the ducks and it's something that we very much enjoy doing, I have however been told that doing so can stop them from looking for their own food is that true? Thank you so much for your help :)

if you feed the ducklings they will think its jsut normal to get fed by people at certain times of the day. i guess older ducks will have learned to find their own food so it wont make much difference.

It doesn't hurt the ducks, and it won't stop them finding their own food. Don't worry about it and enjoy it. It can actually be hard work especially for mother ducks with broods to find enough food. Brown bread is better than white, and cheap grain won't hurt them either. You can buy wheat grain from some pet shops. Ducklings learn how to find food from their mothers. Supplemetary feeding won't hurt and doesn't stop them hunting their pwn food. They won't starve if you stop - as long as there is enough natural food around to support them. If there isn't, they'll leave if they can.

I happen to know a lot about ducks as I am owned by 5 of them! I did all my research first and have a friend who is an avian expert from Cornell. A lot of people feed ducks in parks. In and of itself, it's not bad, but the problem is that everyone feeds them bread. Bread of any kind is not healthy for ducks, neither are seeds. They have an entirely different digestive system than we do or other birds for that matter. What happens is that they will fill up on the bread and end up suffering from malnutrition because they won't eat the healthy stuff that they are supposed to eat. Kind of like kids only wanting candy but never wanting to eat their veggies! In fact, if all we ever ate was bread, we'd be having some nutritional problems, as well, yes? So I usually suggest to people to bring a bag of duck feed (Purina duck chow --- yes, they make it) See if your local feed store has it in small quantities as I am sure that you won't be needing a 50 lb bag! Otherwise, see if they will eat lettuce (not iceberg) maybe romaine, mine happen to go crazy for PEAS! I thaw out a bag of frozen peas for them and put it in a bowl and watch them go nuts! I have a friend whose ducks love tomatoes (mine don't) but maybe try different healthy things and see which ones they like. Too many other people will be bringing bread, so don't add to it. Onions, avocados and chocolate are poisonous to birds of all kinds! Never feed them that.

Previous posts have mentioned that bread is bad for ducks this is very true, it does fill them up but provides almost zero nutrition so whilst constantly feeling full they can literally starve to death. Remember your not the only ones feeding them. I have 12 ducks of my own and three of them are week old ducklings :-) they have never even tasted bread, pastries or any other junk food for that matter. We feed them on pellets, Steamed veg, carrots cabbage brocolli, potatoes. and feed them grated carrot lettuce thin sliced cucumber. There absolute favourite is spinach you can buy it bags from Tesco's and Morrisons and they love it. It can be fed straight from the bag :-) Just remember that the ducks in the park will not be used to anything but bread and may take time to adjust, however they will be better off for it. Overall if spoilt enough by people and fed enough rubbish then yes they may not bother going in search of their normal food sources. I hope you continue to feed and enjoy the ducks they are wonderful birds :-)

Though bread doesn't really have much in the way of nutrients in it for the ducks,it doesn't hurt them one bit to eat it whether it is white, wheat, whole grain etc. Don't much think I would give them Deli Rye or Cinnamon Raisin. . . costs too much to just throw away. All birds know how to hunt food,it's there from the day they are born and they all know how to hunt for food as it is a natural instinct. Those ducks aren't eating bread every day all day long. . . they forrage alot at night when there are bugs moving about and the majority of those ducks though of a domesticated nature have forraged for food before and know how to do it. I have raised my chickens/ducks up from babies and for the last 3yrs I have always fed them but I have no doubt that IF I were to allow them to just roam and fend for themselves they would find food on their own and if I didn't have to worry about predators it would certainly be cheaper for me to do so but for me,I enjoy taking care of my birds. I have tried to feed my ducks bread but they have been fed duck food and diced veggies and diced fruits all their lives and they turn their noses up at bread. ONLY thing I ask of you when you go to feed the ducks the bread. . . . PLEASE don't throw the plastic wrapper out there at the park. Animals get into the trash when the lids are left open and it is possible that the wrapper could get lose and either find it's way into the water where the ducks swim and could entrap them and or they could smell the bread crumbs in it and try to get more and suffocate itself. Take the wrapper back home to throw it away and avoid hurting the ducks you love so much to feed.
